BSNL’s 4G has been rolling out circle by circle with an Indian vendor consortium, while much of its footprint still serves 3G. The same SIM can give you 35 Mbps at home and 4 Mbps at your village — not a fault, just two generations of network.
3G fallback defines the experience
Where 4G is absent, BSNL’s 3G typically delivers 2–10 Mbps with pings of 100–250 ms. That’s workable for messaging and SD streaming, and genuinely difficult for competitive games — latency, not bandwidth, is the limit.
Coverage over speed, by design
As a state operator, BSNL’s strength is reach: government offices, highways and villages where no private carrier makes money. If BSNL is your only signal, the goal is getting the most out of it — which starts with measuring it.

You’re on 3G and don’t know it
Outside 4G zones the phone silently falls back to 3G. Speedtest numbers of 2–8 Mbps with ping above 100 ms are the signature of a 3G session, not a broken handset.
Correctif — In phone settings, set network mode to 4G/LTE only for a minute and see if signal survives. If it does, you have 4G; if it drops, you’re in a 3G-only area — expectations should be reset accordingly.
SIM and APN configuration after upgrades
Older SIMs and stale APN profiles after BSNL’s 4G migration can cap speeds or break 4G attachment entirely — devices end up stuck on legacy settings.
Correctif — Reset APN to the carrier default (bsnlnet), reseat or upgrade the SIM at a BSNL office if it predates the 4G rollout, restart, then retest here to confirm the fix took.
3G is the wrong tool for games
Even a “good” 3G result — 8 Mbps down — can hide 150 ms pings and 50 ms jitter. Download-speed-only judgement will lie to you about gaming readiness.
